What is the Billings Ovulation Method®?

The Billings Ovulation Method® is a simple, yet scientific, natural method of fertility management that teaches you to recognize the body’s natural signs of fertility..

Pure and simple! Based on over 50+ years of ongoing scientific research, the Billings Ovulation Method® is a highly effective, yet simple way to postpone or achieve pregnancy and monitor reproductive health without drugs or devices. The Billings Ovulation Method® can work effectively for women whether they are coming off hormonal contraceptives, breastfeeding, weaning or approaching menopause. Regardless of the particular situation, the four simple rules of the method are the same for everyone.

The effectiveness of the Billings Method™ has been published in numerous medical journals including, Lancet, Contraception, Fertility and Sterility, British Medical Journal, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology
as well as by the World Health Organization.

Your reproductive system is wonderfully complex, yet the signals it gives you can be quite simple, helping you identify the fertile and infertile times in your cycles. You may have noticed different types of discharge coming from the vagina throughout your menstrual cycle. The sensation that this discharge produces outside the vaginal opening also changes. This is because your cervix produces different types of mucus in response to changing hormone levels. Once you’re familiar with these changes you’ll be able to identify patterns of fertility and infertility in your cycle.

Cervical mucus is the most reliable signal of fertility. Over 50 years of scientific research have shown this.
The Billings Ovulation Method® has a number of key advantages over other methods of fertility management:

  • A unique feature of the method is being able to recognize when you’re infertile, as well as when you’re fertile. So you can be confident in knowing, on any particular day, whether intercourse is likely to result in a pregnancy. You are in control depending on whether you want to achieve or avoid pregnancy. Trials by the World Health Organization have shown that over 90% of women can identify the fertile phase and peak day of fertility in the 1st month of observation and charting.
  • When you decide the time is right to have a baby, the method can be used to achieve pregnancy. Knowing how to identify your fertile time and your Peak of fertility optimizes your chances of conceiving.
  • It helps you safeguard your reproductive health. Once you learn to recognize what is normal for you in your menstrual cycle and patterns of cervical mucus, you’ll be able to identify what isn’t. If you notice irregularities, such as abnormal bleeding or an unusual pattern of discharge, you’ll know to seek medical assistance.

Effectiveness in Preventing Pregnancy

What separates the Billings Ovulation Method® from other natural and artificial methods is its simplicity based on solid research. Over 850,000 hormonal assays confirm that the four simple rules of the method work. It has been independently trialled by the World Health Organisation and other reputable bodies and found to be  successful for avoiding pregnancy.

In one of the largest trials of the Billings Ovulation Method®, a 12-month multi-centre study in China, the method-related pregnancy rate was zero. The method-related rate is when couples correctly follow all the instructions for the method of birth control. The use-related pregnancy rate was 0.5%. The use-related rate includes couples who misunderstood or did not comply with all the instructions. These results reflect a method that can be as effective as the Pill, and more effective than  condoms and diaphragms. Pregnancy rates with perfect use of the Billings Ovulation Method have fallen close to zero as teaching methods have been refined and updated. Continuation rates are consistently high.

Success in Achieving Pregnancy

Results of a retrospective study of couples who attended Billings Ovulation Method® clinics between 1999 and 2003 wishing to achieve pregnancy – of 384 participants, 240 achieved pregnancy – a total of 63%. Sixty percent of these couples had previously been childless and only 18% had prior knowledge of the signs of fertility. The average length of time they had been trying to achieve pregnancy was 15 months, and the average time from initial instruction in the Billings Ovulation Method® to conception was 4.7 months. 207 couples were previously classified as sub-fertile (trying to achieve for more than 12 months) and, of 20 couples who had previously been unsuccessful with IVF/ART, 7 achieved pregnancy using the Billings Ovulation Method®. Of those over 38 years of age, about half achieved pregnancy.
